Answering questions from press representatives at Istanbul Airport, Head of the 8th National Antarctic Science Expedition, Prof. Dr. Ersan Başar stated that the National Antarctic Science Expedition, which began in Istanbul on January 27, was completed on March 2.

Başar stated that 24 scientists, including 20 Turkish scientists, 2 Spanish, 1 Bulgarian and 1 American citizens, carried out their projects.

Stating that the scientists participating in the expedition have started their project work, Başar said, “The projects include marine science studies, oceanography studies, earth science studies, glacier studies and astrophysics studies. All of our scientists completed their planned projects on time.”

Başar pointed out that there are also bilateral collaborations in the projects: “We have foreign scientists from different countries. We also carry out studies together with them. Likewise, the scientific studies carried out by Turkish scientists at foreign bases fall within the scope of the Antarctic project.”

Stating that scientific studies in Antarctica continue in many ways, Başar explained that there is a Turkish science camp in Antarctica and that they are currently conducting studies on Horseshoe Island and the surrounding region through this camp with the support of ship logistics.
